Sleep on it

SLEEP ON IT

Sometimes you’ve just got to sleep on it. Especially, if the night before you mulled over something over in the middle-of-the-night and essentially lost half a good night’s rest.

So, I let it rest. And after a little reading and editing of the day’s photos I let go of my usual midnight run with the bulls: the Hemmingways, the Fitzgeralds, the Joyces of the underworld of writing and I shut my eyes and this whole blessed-be-damned mental operation down, so I that I might recoup just a little of my daytime sanity.

Every once in a while you’ve got to remind yourself that you can’t do it all (Oh, but I can!) or at least do it all at one time. That’s why sleep is the evil, albeit necessary, intermediary that allows your brain to rest when often it doesn’t want to.

If you don’t force yourself into the land of the lost that’s when dreams really become reality (i.e., you begin to hallucinate), you see and hear and imagine spirits, you don’t think straight and you fall asleep at the wheel of life.

So, as my favorite band of the day like to say and sing “take it easy.” Give it a rest every once in a while, hang up them spurs and pour yourself a cold one or whatever puts your mind at ease, just enough so that you forget what you’re striving for, if only for a few somnolent hours.
